Victoria Day 2017
Victoria Day is a public holiday in Canada and is celebrated as a statutory federal holiday and in most provinces. It recognizes the birth of Queen Victoria on the 24th of May 1819.
Victoria Day, also called May Long, May Long Weekend, or May 24 (said May two-four) is recognized the last Monday before 25 May. As such, it is normally celebrated between 18-24 May and represents the unofficial start of summer for many Canadians.
Kicking off the summer with May Long Weekend usually means participating in sporting events or competitions, such as softball tournaments or getting out for your first round of golf. You’ll see Farmer’s Markets opening up this weekend for the season and it’s usually the first time people are firing up their grill.
Picnics and BBQs are popular ways to celebrate Victoria Day, and many parties are held in the backyard which is now finally green and is raked, mowed and restored to its previous year’s glory.
